Isengrim’s teeth sank into Marcus’ flesh. Raw, primal anger coursed through my body. That was my brother, and even though I knew nothing about Marcus’ life, damned if I was going to lose him before I knew what he was doing here. He had kept Alex alive. I would gladly return the favour.

I pushed my weight back on my hind legs and pounced, covering the distance between us in a moment. I aimed right for Isengrim’s throat, my teeth bared, ready to bite down.

Just as I came in, a shape moved in front of me, and I crashed into it instead.

Alex.

She sprawled across the ground, her head cracking against the asphalt. That ridiculous sword clattered from her hands. Shit.

Alex was still moving, her hands feeling around her for the sword. Isengrim glanced up, his eyes blazing. His face was stained with my brother’s blood, with Raynard blood.

Go to hell, I snarled.

Isengrim snarled back. I leapt at him, landing hard on his back and sinking my claws into his flesh, holding on as hard as I could. I rammed my teeth into his neck, and as his metallic blood filled my mouth, I worked my jaws shut, tearing through his flesh. His howl turned to one of pain.

So much blood. So much of my brother’s blood, I could taste it in my mouth, too, matted in Isengrim’s fur. Isengrim was five times my size. It would take all the rage boiling inside me to bring him down. But it would be hopeless – Marcus would already be gone.

Isengrim thrashed, but I held on tight. He lashed back with his paw. I wrenched my body to the right, narrowly avoiding a nasty gash. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Alex roll across the ground, nearly impaling herself on her sword. I screamed at her inside my head, just as another fox leapt through the air, crashing into me with claws out.

This is it. I’m done for.
